An overall grade point average of at least 3.600, with evidence of ability to do excellent work in the major field, usually indicates that a student is prepared to enter the program.
Students should apply on their own initiative for admission to the program. Application should be made during the second semester of the junior year to the Department of English Committee on Honors.
Either of the following two sequences may be used for honors:
|
1. English 691H and 692H. These courses constitute the traditional program in honors in the final two semesters before graduation. In English 691H the student reads primary and secondary material in the field which she plans to investigate under the direction of a member of the department and submits a prospectus at the end of the semester. In English 692H she writes an essay of substantial length on a specific subject within the field and takes an oral examination on the field of the essay. Grades on English 691H and 692H are assigned after the oral examination. Students who complete the two courses receive the Bachelor of Arts degree with Honors or Highest Honors in English. A grade of "C" or below for English 691H or 692H disqualifies the student from graduating with honors. The ordinary prerequisite for enrollment is a 3.600 grade point average at the time of application. Transfer students must have completed at least two English courses at this University with a grade of "A" or "A-" to qualify for a senior honors project and must have, like all students, a minimum gpa of 3.600 for work done here. |
2. An "H" section seminar and English 692H. Students may enroll in honors seminars ("H"-sections) with a minimum gpa of 3.200. However, in order to proceed from the "H"-section to English 692H in the following semester, the student must have a minimum gpa of 3.600 at the time of enrolling in the seminar. The student must also earn a grade of "A" in the seminar in order to proceed to English 692H. The sequence of "H"-section and English 692H ordinarily leads to graduation "with honors" or "with highest honors" in English, and both courses should be completed sequentially in the last two semesters before graduation. In the first semester, the student will complete the requirements of the seminar, and the paper written for the seminar should include additional research in anticipation of expanding the paper into a thesis in English 692H. In English 692H, the student will work independently with the instructor in the honors seminar. |
