Graduate Studies - Foreign Language Proficiency Requirement
The English Department considers a reading knowledge of foreign languages essential to the educational and professional aims of its degree programs. M.A. candidates are required to show proficiency in one foreign language and Ph.D. candidates in two. The Department recommends Latin, French, German, Italian, and Spanish. The use of other languages to fulfill the requirement must be approved by the Director of Graduate Studies. An undergraduate major in an approved language automatically satisfies the requirement. Ordinarily, however, students fulfill the requirements while enrolled as graduate students by completing special reading courses for graduate students offered by the Classics, German, and Romance Languages Departments or by completing with a grade of at least B while enrolled as a graduate student an undergraduate literature course in a foreign language. The foreign language requirement must be satisfied before the student can be admitted to candidacy.
