Visiting the Program
We welcome prospective students as visitors to the program. However, because Jessica Wolfe, our current director of admissions, is on leave during autumn 2008, she will not be able to meet personally with students until she resumes her teaching duties in early January 2009. You are welcome to email Professor Wolfe with questions about the program or about your application; she will also be happy to contact individual students by telephone. Administrative offices for the Department of English are located on the second floor of Greenlaw Hall. Our main phone number is (919) 962-5481.
If you wish to meet with the current director of Graduate Admissions during your visit, please email Professor Jessica Wolfe at least two weeks before you anticipate visiting the campus, and she will try to make time to accommodate you.
If you wish to visit classes or to meet with individual faculty members during your visit, you may contact those faculty members directly, but bear in mind that not all faculty respond to emails from prospective students who have not yet been accepted into the program. Also bear in mind that, during the 2006-07 academic year, classes meet from August 23rd until December 6th and again from January 11th until April 28th, with short vacations in October, November, and March. If you visit our campus during a time when classes are not held, you will still be able to take a campus tour and visit our facilities, but it is not likely that you will be able to meet with our faculty or with the director of Graduate Admissions.
All students admitted to our graduate program are invited to campus for a long weekend in late March, during which time they will have ample opportunity to visit classes, tour the campus, and meet with faculty and current graduate students. The 2007 visiting weekend is tentatively scheduled for Thursday—Saturday 29-31 March, 2007 and all admitted students will receive an invitation to this event along with their departmental letter of admission.
The first place you may want to visit when coming to UNC-Chapel Hill is the University’s Visitor’s Center (UNC Visitor's Center) near Morehead Planetarium. You will find driving directions here. Parking is limited on campus, so please check the Visitor Parking webpage to find visitor parking locations.
