How to Apply
In order to apply for admission to the graduate program in English at UNC Chapel Hill, you need to do the following:
- fill out an online application through the Graduate School
- send the required material and the application fee to the Graduate School
- send the required material directly to the English Department

(1) Application for admission must be made on the online form provided by the Graduate School. To be considered for fellowships and assistantships, be sure to mark the appropriate statement on this electronic form (no other action is required). Further important details and links to the Graduate School web pages are provided under Quick Checklist and Summary.
(2) Mail the following items directly to the Graduate School. Their address is:

(b) One set of official transcripts from all institutions of higher education (including summer school and study abroad)
(c) One set of official GRE scores for the General GRE exam. The results of your GRE General Exam must be reported directly by ETS to the Graduate School. For this report to be sent, you must specifically request ETS to send your scores to UNC.
(3) Mail the following items directly to the English Department. Their address is:

- Writing sample
- Statement of purpose
- One set of official transcripts from all institutions attended
- Three letters of recommendation, sealed and signed by recommender*
(Please note that letters of recommendation can be sent directly to the English Department from the recommender or it can be sent with your statement of purpose and writing sample as long as the letters are signed across the seal from the recommender.) - For Comparative Literature Program applicants only: Applicants who are interested in securing a teaching fellowship in the Department of Romance Languages (French, Spanish, Italian, and/or Portuguese) should send with their application a tape or CD of themselves speaking in the language they wish to teach.
* Make sure to use a recommendation form with each recommender.
