*The following resources are available to Teaching Fellows in the Department of English and Comparative Literature.*

Staff Rooms
The Robert A. Bain staff room for all teaching fellows is located in 219 Greenlaw, with a smaller staffroom in Swain Hall. The Bain Staff room houses a computer, copiers, and office supplies. The Bain Staff room is open Monday-Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.. It is your responsibility to keep the staff rooms clean and to see that supplies remain stocked for the convenience of others. Please do not bring food or drinks into the rooms or use supplies and equipment for personal matters.

There is a telephone in the Bain Staff room for your convenience. For local, off-campus calls, dial 9 and then the number. For on-campus calls (914, 962 or 966 prefix) dial the last five digits only.

The Idea Files
An "Idea File" is available in the Program Office for teaching fellows to consult when designing syllabi, unit projects, etc. The Idea File contains information on holistic scoring and classroom techniques, sample syllabi and unit projects for all composition courses, and specific ideas for English 12 thematic courses. You are welcome to browse through the file and photocopy materials as needed.

The SITES IdeaFile is a collection of practical, adaptable, classroom-tested ideas for using technology to teach writing and/or literature. Instructors can use the IdeaFile on-line database to preserve and share their innovative work. Each entry in the database describes a singular exercise or assignment that successfully integrates technology into course work. Ideas may apply to activities inside the class or out and may make use of just about any computer application from word processing, to the WWW, to MOOs/MUDs. We encourage all teaching fellows both to submit and review ideas. Please email Todd Taylor for more information about the SITES IdeaFile resource.

Equipment
Copiers. The Bain Staff room houses two copiers that can enlarge, reduce, make transparencies, and make double-sided copies. A copier also is available in Swain Hall for teaching fellows whose offices are located there. To ensure continued satisfactory service from the staff room copiers, please notify the English department receptionist when warning lights or messages appear.

Record Players, Overhead Projectors, VCRs, Televisions, and Videocameras. You may reserve most equipment in advance through the Center for Teaching and Learning. Two videocameras, tripods, and blank videotapes are available for you to check out through the Writing Program Office. Please use these cameras to tape students' speeches, record group presentations, and evaluate your own performance in the classroom.

Videotapes. The Writing Program owns videotapes ranging from sample student speeches to professional speeches, tapes on effective group work, and teaching model tapes; titles are listed below. You will find these videotapes, available for check-out from the Program Office, to be a valuable teaching resource. If you need to reserve viewing rooms such as the Honors Reading Room or Conference Room 211 in the Undergraduate Library, go to the Nonprint Circulation Desk in the Undergraduate Library and talk to one of the supervisors.

Videotapes we have available are: Revising Prose; Revising Business Prose; Student Writing Groups: Demonstrating the Process; Searching Writing: Making Knowledge Personal; Finding Yourself at UNC Chapel Hill; UNC Center: The Teaching Resource; Black in White America; What's in a Grade? The AP Readings; (actual student speeches to the BOT concerning tuition raises) and from The Speeches Collection: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.; John F. Kennedy; Franklin D. Roosevelt; Richard M. Nixon; Winston Churchill; and Abraham Lincoln. Also available are audio cassette tapes entitled John F. Kennedy: A Self-Portrait, and Great Black Speeches, 1833-1893.

Blackboards. The blackboard is your best visual aid when questions arise that involve the whole class. You can organize discussions on it, emphasize major points, make notes of page numbers for assignments, and work with examples of writing problems. You probably will need the blackboard every day your class meets, so make a habit of taking chalk with you to class. As a courtesy to the teacher using your room the following class period, please erase the board before you leave.

Computers. Each TF office in Greenlaw is equipped with one desktop computer providing internet access. Other computers in Greenlaw are available in the Bain Staff room and the SITES lab. A limited number of laptop computers are available for use in classroom teaching. These computers are awarded by application and checked-out for an entire semester. If you wish to use a laptop with your students in class, please check with the Program Office for application information.

Studio for Instructional Technology and English Studies
The SITES lab is located in Greenlaw 314. It is a workroom for graduate students and faculty who want advice and help in using instructional technology in their teaching and research. SITES sponsors workshops, offers consultation by appointment, and maintains a linked computer classroom for use in composition and literature courses. Please come by the lab, call 962-8232, or email Director Dan Anderson for more information.

Center for Teaching and Learning
CTL provides a variety of services to support you in your teaching. It houses reference materials pertaining to college teaching, and staff members are glad to discuss teaching problems with you and offer suggestions. The Center's staff can help you develop instructional materials or show you how to use the equipment in the self-service media lab. They can videotape your class so that you can evaluate your teaching in private or with a staff member. All staff members are strongly encouraged to have their classes taped at least once a term. The Center (966-1289) is located in 316 Wilson Library. Services are free.
