Rewards
The Writing Program rewards outstanding teaching and innovative thinking
through a number of awards. The following awards recognize outstanding
teaching in composition and yield a modest cash award:
- The Earl Hartsell Award for Excellence in teaching Composition,
first awarded in 1977
- The John R. Gaskin Award for Excellence in teaching Composition,
established in 1982
- The Doris Betts Award for Excellence in teaching Composition, established
in 1986
- Three Laurence Avery Awards commend outstanding teaching in undergraduate
literature courses.
The following awards acknowledge innovative thinking in course design:
- The SITES Award for Computer-Assisted Teaching, awarded annually
for the best ideas for integrating technology into the teaching of
composition and/or literature.
- The C.S. Herschel Course Development Award, awarded annually for
units developed for composition classes.
